Die abenteuerliche Geschichte einer Mäusezivilisation im Mittelalter. Genau genommen im Winter des Jahres 1152. Versteckt agieren die Nager in dieser schweren Zeit, in der nicht nur Schlangen, Wölfe und Krabben schier gigantische Feinde sind, sondern auch machtgierige und intrigante Mäuse.
Wo kein Feind zu klein ist, um nicht auch ein großer Gegner zu sein, müssen die Mäuse der Wache besondere Größe zeigen. In jedem Moment ihres kurzen Lebens. Ein Mäuseleben ist kurz und der Jahreszeitenwechsel kann viele Veränderungen mit sich führen.
Der Winter ist angebrochen und mit ihm eine gefährliche Nahrungsmittelknappheit, die der angeschlagenen Mäusestadt Lockhaven zum Verhängnis zu werden droht.
